Container Gardening

I have a black thumb and that is why I do all of my flower gardening in containers.  Better Homes & Gardens Magazine (free subscription when I bought my mother-in-law an edible arrangement last year) always has some great combinations for pots.  That's what we did today and I had a great helper.  Enjoy the pictures.  I had fun taking them.

Cheers!

Mother's Day 2011

Boys are moody (case in point, see pictures following this paragraph), rambuncious, protective (of their mommies), funny, gross, hyper, and most of all, they love their mommies ferociously for the first few years!

Irritated.

Five minutes later, happy as a clam.

You Know You're Mom to a Boy When...
By: W.A.'s Momma

1) You scream "Get down from there or you'll break you're neck" at least twelve times daily.

2) You find one of your high heels in the washing machine/dishwasher.

3) You step on a matchbox car at least twice daily (this hurts).

4) You find boogers on every surface below your knee.

5) You say "Stop wiping your nose with the front of your Tshirt" thrice daily.

6) Your wake up call is a) a slap to your face with the remote for your TV or,  b) that damn matchbox car or c) a smelly foot in your face.

7) You hear a fart followed by hysterical laughter.

8) You constantly reprimand your son for trying to ride the family dog like a pony.

9) You no longer wear those high heels you find in your appliances because it's hard to run around and play ball in those.

10) You find sandwiches in your printer's paper tray and DVD/CD drives.

11) You have to monitor the toilet so he won't play in the water and then drink it (yes, this happened just this morning. Ew.).

12) You are exhausted by (their) nap time!

Happy Mothers Day, Ladies!  Give all your precious boys a kiss from me!

And a very special Happy Mother's Day to my momma!  Thanks for being such a fun and wonderful Oma to all your grandboys!

Me and my mom, circa 1982.  Don't you love the hair on both of us?

Cheers!

P.S. The pink blanket in the first 2 pictures was mine when I was a baby (made by my maternal grandmother) and it's my most treasured item I own, along with my paternal grandmother's pearls.

Happy Easter 2011

Happy Easter, everyone!

Easter, circa 1980

Over the next few days I will be busy at the gym, doing laundry at home and getting ready for my trip to Atlanta, Nashville, and back to Atlanta so I am blogging some things early since I wont have any time to do it.

My Kentucky Gentleman and I have a conference in Nashville and before and after I will be visiting my family and two of my oldest girlfriends for what I imagine will be a "fun walk down memory lane" visit/playdate.

I will be posting my Mothers Day post in just a few moments as well.

So, again, enjoy your Easter services and meals, and  remember why we celebrate!  Jesus Christ died on the cross for our sins so we might have everlasting life in the Kingdom of Heaven.

God Bless!

It Takes A Village...

When W.A. came into our lives, I was (excuse my language here) scared shitless.

My husband and I moved away from both of our families almost a decade ago.  We had no friends with children here initially, because we were still living the "parentless" life.  You know, vacations on a whim filled with good wine, good food, lazy evenings with lots of uninterrupted adult conversations....think Cape May, N.J. with $75 bottles of wine, $82 lobster tails (okay just once, but we paid that, and it was gooood).  We could stay out until wee hours of the morning and we could sleep in until ten if we wanted.

But I digress...becoming a parent has its own, more spectacular pleasures and rewards.  Back to the point...

We did find friends with children eventually and we quickly fit into the role of parents.  My ultimate saving grace though was October 2010 when a new family moved into our neighborhood...right next door.

W.A. has a best buddy and they are exactly 4 months and 5 days apart.  They attended each other's birthday celebrations and have taken several field trips together.  His buddy also happens to have parents our age and interests in common.  His name is Liam.  When Liam hears W.A. through the open windows on a nice day he shouts, "William William William".  When W.A. hears Liam from the back porch across the fence he points excitedly and exclaims, "Liam Liam Liam."

When I say, "We are going to Liam's", he raises his little arms and screams, "Yaaaaaaaaaay!".

It couldn't be more perfect...especially when Liam's mom and I trade supervision duties once or twice a week!  We get to grocery shop minus screaming toddlers.  We can take a nap, clean the house, bake a cake, do laundry, plant flowers, etc.  Those two quiet hours are priceless.  Our husbands are off to work most of the week so they can't help much with a much needed break.

And the boys love it.  I am so thankful for my neighbors and the beautiful friendship our boys are developing.  Its truly amazing watching them when they get along so well...

...oh and the fresh baked breads, French lessons (yes, my baby is bilingual already!), crepes, and good old girlfriend-to-girlfriend conversations don't hurt either!

Cheers!

The National Zoo

My Kentucky Gentleman and I took W.A. to The National Zoo!  It was a beautiful day and all of the animals were out and about rough-housing and frolicking!  We saw the Asian Elephants, Lions, Cheetahs, and our zoo's claim to fame: THE PANDAS!  Enjoy the pictures!

And it wiped him out.  Good thing, because The District's traffic is terrible during rush hour.  You think Atlanta's bad????

I cant wait to take him to the Ape House at Zoo Atlanta to see Willie B. (#256).  Is there even a Willie B anymore?  I hope so.  That was a great memory from my childhood.

Cheers!

Into My 35th Year

I'll be turning 34 tomorrow.  I was super excited to turn 30.  It meant that I was now officially an "adult".  With every year that gets added on to my 30th birthday, I really look forward to it!  I made a list of ten things I am going to accomplish in my 35th year...

1.  Learn to cook 7 healthy meals.
2.  Practice my French.
3.  Blog more aggressivley (whatever that means).
4.  Lose this last 20 pounds.
5.  Run more races. (target= 1 per month).
6.  Learn how to use a camera (thx, Amy and E).
7.  Lower Triglycerides (duh).
8.  Learn how to write a screenplay of my favorite books.
9.   Play more tennis.
10.  Play more golf.  Gotta get the dust off of my clubs.  They've been used maybe twice so lets re-phrase that to just "play golf".

Cheers!

P.S. God, if you're reading, I'd really like to come back as Heidi Klum in my next life!

Heartbreaking...

Not a fun, happy, positive post this morning ladies and gentleman.

http://www.cnn.com/2011/WORLD/americas/04/07/brazil.school.shooting/index.html

My heart is with all of the mothers of the Brazilian children who were harmed and killed yesterday.  Let us all pray for them during this very difficult time.

2011 Masters

How beautiful the greens and fairways are at Augusta National!  I look forward to seeing the Dogwoods and Azaleas as much as my Kentucky Gentleman looks forward to the tournament itself.

I was lucky enough to send my dear husband to The Masters a few years ago.  Pre W.A. of course, because that was when we had extra money that didnt go to diapers!  Here are a couple of photos he took!

Go Phil Mickelson!

Cheers!

P.S. Yes that is Tiger Woods in all his glory...it was 2007.  EDITED TO ADD: My apologies, this is Veejay Singh, not Tiger Woods.

Lollipops

I seriously don't get women in their 20's walking around the clubs, bars, beaches, malls, etc sucking on lollipops.  Am I missing something?
It's kind of creepy.

Cheers!

De-Stress Projects #2 and #3..

I am just blogging away these last few days!  I have no idea whether it's feeling like I have something to say or the fact that I cannot log on to Facebook.  Oh well...

W.A. and I took not only one, but two walks today to de-stress and get some fresh air.  I love my neighborhood.  There were so many young couples out with toddlers and the older folk doing yard work.  My neighborhood is beautiful in the Spring.  It gets even better in the Summer.  People really take pride in their yards here.  I am so thankful for that.

In between walks, I brought out W.A.'s tricycle and the little four wheeler his Aunt Stephie sent him.  He rode those around, pushed his stroller across the yard, played in the flowers and drew with some sidewalk chalk.

Okay, I did most of the drawing.  After my masterpiece, I just sat back and watched.  It was relaxing.

Hope you all had a great Sunday as well.

Cheers!

The Bible.

I read to W.A. every night.  Lately, his favorite book is his little illustrated Bible I bought when he was only a few months old.  He will bring it to me at bedtime and we'll read three or four stories from it back to back.  It's so cute and I am so proud that my little man already has a strong foundation for his spiritual journey.

He clasps his hands together before every meal and bedtime, reminding us all to pray.  He can't even use his limited vocabulary in a sentence yet!

My favorite part of all of this: When we read the story of Adam and Eve, he points to Adam's bare rear-end and says "Butt?"

So adorable.

Cheers!

Triglycerides, who?

So, Dr. Ken called with news that my cholesterol is fine, however, I have high triglycerides.

According to the Mayo Clinic's health website, "Triglycerides are a type of lipid found in your blood. When you eat, your body converts any calories it doesn't need to use right away into triglycerides. The triglycerides are stored in your fat cells. Later, hormones release triglycerides for energy between meals. If you regularly eat more calories than you burn, particularly "easy" calories like carbohydrates and fats, you may have high triglycerides (hypertriglyceridemia)."

I thought I was doing so well eating healthfully and doing 60 minutes of rigorous exercise five days a week.  After further research on how to lower my triglycerides, I discovered the very root of my problem.  Wine.  I know a glass of red wine a day is supposed to be good for your heart, but what about that one weekend night a week that my Kentucky Gentleman and I can split an entire bottle?  Not good.  And furthermore, Better Homes and Gardens magazine had an article titled Ladies First in there February 2011 issue that states, "Several years ago, Japanese researchers found that women who drank 2-4 drinks per day were 45 percent more likely to die of heart disease than female non-drinkers."  Wow.  I gave up smoking (which was not easy) so I'll be giving up my wine too.  Or cut down.  Two glasses a week should be fine, right?  I have a son that is ripping through the terrible two's. I need my down time.

In addition to changing our diet and cutting out alcohol, I have added a Monday night Yoga class (I can follow my DVD's the rest of the week) and stocked up on Sleepytime hot tea.

Take care of your heart, ladies!

Cheers!

De-stress Project #1

While W.A. took a nap, I took on a small project in an attempt to de-stress.  I went outside with my camera to get some fresh air and take some pictures.  I love to take pictures of nature even though I am terrible at it.  I love looking at my neighbor's photography and my favorite Peach's as well.  They have real cameras (mine is a $100 pocket digital) and real equipment (and a real eye for it) so please do not compare me to them.  I can only aspire to be at that level!

Anyhoo...here are my photos....

Pansies, Lil Edna*, Mint, Weeds and Spring Skies...

Cheers!

* Lil Edna is a similar plant to the one I brought home from my Grandmother's funeral.  I killed big Edna when I accidentally left her outside during a cold night last fall.  I am still upset about it because I managed to keep that thing alive for three years even though I have a black thumb.  Lil Edna is a replacement, but still reminds me of the Real Edna.

April!

I love April!  April has April Fools Day (I love a good prank), Easter (My late grandmother's favorite holiday) and it just so happens that I will be turning 34 this month.

First of all, my husband got me good when he came home from work last night.  It was just after midnight when he got into bed.  I was still awake with some anxiety related pain (more on this later) and he says, "you know what, I'll get up with little man in the morning and you can sleep in."  Wow.  I was so elated since I have been having some sleepless nights lately.  I replied with excitement, "really?".  Yeah, that was met with:

"April Fools!"

My Kentucky Gentleman is a real stinker.  I think he deserves his car to be moved down the street while he is sleeping tonight.

Anyway, since I realized I am turning 34, a few things started to turn over in my head: my father and grandfather had massive coronary heart attacks in their mid-thirties.  My youngest sister has some slight blockage at 27 years old.  I am starting to worry about my health.  I quit smoking a while ago, started eating right and have lost a total of about 30 pounds.  Still I started to worry.  On top of that,  I have a close family member who is going through a sad life changing event, my kid is still not eating alot and for all of those reasons I have started to suffer some major anxiety.  My jaw has been tight for days and I started having chest pains...

I'm fine.  I had an EKG yesterday and some bloodwork and I am continuing my healthy eating and rigorous exercise.  But I am trying to do more Yoga and massages to get this anxiety and tension under control.  Since I quit smoking I have no idea how to deal with stress of this magnitude.

Luckily, I have Dr. Ken and he is keeping a close eye on me due to my family history.  Any ideas on how to relax?  I was thinking I'll just spend more fun time with my favorite guys and less time on stressful thoughts that I cant change.

Happy April everyone!  And Happy Birthday to all my April buddies: Megan, Bailor, Mike, Aunt Butchie and Grammy Nancy!  And 9if I forgot anyone, happy birthday to you!

Cheers!
