SPECIAL ADVENTURE: Declan Carmical's 1st Birthday

Declan Black Carmical turns 1 today (August 26th) and in honor of his birthday, W.A. and tons of other people all over the country sent balloons to Heaven at 6PM EST.  This small act was set in place by his family to honor his special day and spread awareness about Pediatric Cancer.  Happy Birthday Declan (and Cole)!

As mothers to boys, we will all find this story heartbreaking, however, Declan left us mothers with an important message.  It was Declan's legacy that will move all of us mothers to appreciate every moment we have to share with our precious boys (and girls)!  This little angel touched so many lives.  Although, I did not personally know Declan or meet his family, I feel moved by their story and must share it.  You can find out all about Declan and his legacy, (and pediatric cancer) at http://www.declansjourney.com/  I would have been honored for W.A. to have met this courageous little boy!

Happy birthday Declan Carmical, and our prayers continue for your family!
Sincerely,

W.A.'s Momma

The Good Ole YMCA

W.A. and I go to the YMCA everyday (except weekends).  We spend a good 1 to 2 hours there.  I get my "workout" on while W.A. spends some quality time with his little buddies in the nursery.  Our YMCA has indoor basketball courts, a swimming pool, fitness center, classes galore and the nicest playground you ever saw!

Classes are different for me by the day (bootcamp, running, cycling, etc), but W.A. loves the Nursery.  He never gives me any grief when I drop him off.  The caregivers at our local Y (and other Y's across the country) are fully trained in emergency response so I don't worry one minute that I am away!  And W.A. just loves those ladies!

We started going to the "Y" regularly almost a year ago.  I initially started going because I wanted to lose those extra pounds I put on since marrying my Kentucky Gentleman.  The YMCA is a gym, yes, but to me it has turned into so much more than that.  I've met some of the best instructors there: Betty*, Jane*, and Opal* have me slimmed down, more disciplined and smoke free!  I actually care about my health now!  They are ALWAYS available to answer health and fitness questions with patience!  As a matter of fact, these instructors go so far beyond their normal duties everyday: let me give you an example!  Betty* typed up some exercises for me to do while on vacation!  She also added some last minute tips sitting right there in the floor of the hallway with me.  It doesn't get any better than that.  Try finding that special attention at your "big techno" gyms (Globo-Gym type places as seen on the movie Dodgeball with Ben Stiller).

There are other reasons to join the YMCA that go far beyond just exercise.  Before W.A. came into our lives, all of my girlfriends were not mothers.  I love them, but lets face it.  When we become mothers, our girl time diminishes and you have less in common.  My single girlfriends did not want to hear what color W.A.'s snot was that day or that I was worried about his pooping schedule.  I met some great women at the YMCA in just a few short months and they are mothers to toddlers just like me.  We can talk about our kids' poop, snot, eating habits, etc until we are blue in the face and none of us will think twice about it.  It is so wonderful having this support system in place.  And now we are setting up playdates for our children.  The YMCA can be a great place for Stay at Home Moms!

I cannot wait to get W.A. into our YMCA's pre-school program.  They will teach him colors, shapes and songs, sure.  But they will instill him good moral values and a healthy lifestyle (mentally and physically).  They will teach him to serve his fellow man, give back to his community, and make decisions that are based on kindness.

The YMCA also has great programs that are free or set at a minimal cost for those in the community that can't afford them.  Gym memberships have been reduced or given out free for those without the financial means.  Kids have gone to camps, taken swimming lessons and played basketball!  Your membership dues don't just go to maintaining your exercise equipment, your dollars GIVE BACK!  We can ALL benefit from that in so many ways!

So: SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL YMCA!

Cheers!

W.A.'s Momma

P.S. If this blog hasn't changed your mind about the local YMCA, you can stick with your Globo-Gym, but you will always find me supporting my local YMCA!

Westmoreland Berry Farm

W.A., W.A.'s Daddy and I all decided to take a trip to the Westmoreland Berry Farm!  Also known as WBF, the farm lies approximately 30 miles east of the City of Fredericksburg in Westmoreland County.  It is a working farm/orchard producing peaches, apples, blackberries, cherries and many other fruits and vegetables.  Admission is free and pick your own prices are different for each seasonal fruit.

I did quite a bit of research online at WBF's website about what to pick and when, only to find upon arrival, that ALL of the fields were closed.  Our region has been through a long dry spell so the fruit that made it through ripened fast and was fairly small.  DUH!  I should have known, but I'm no farmer.

BUT (one finger in the air here)!  I did not despair, because WBF had lots to do other than the "pick your own" experience we had shown up for!  For starters, and to my immense pleasure, there was a Country Store!  Hey, any shopping is good shopping if you ask me!

Secondly, WBF had a nice little playground (two, in fact) next to some lovely peach trees.  Both playgrounds overlook the rolling (albeit closed) berry fields and the Rappahannock River.  W.A. enjoyed climbing up and riding down the big slide all by himself!  Next he enjoyed pushing his stroller from the playground to the goats in the air!  Yes!  Goats...in...the...air!

Westmoreland Berry Farm describes this as "goats in the sky".  This is a very cool series of posts, platforms and ramps that the goats travel back and forth on.  This intricate setup is stationed above the road leading into the fields and the picnic area.  W.A. was not interested but your boys out there old enough to "get it" will think it is the coolest thing in the world!

After a few moments of play, we enjoyed some fresh peaches (I'm from Georgia, that was a "must") in their picnic/cafe area.  This area is just outside the Country Store and adjacent to the playgrounds.  It was so nice to eat our fresh picked produce while taking in the beautiful views of the river.  The WBF also has a full service cafe serving hot dogs, chili-dogs, fries and even sundaes with HOMEMADE ice cream!  Peach flavored ice cream is my favorite!
W.A.'s Daddy got some father/son time, Momma got to shop (a witch flag for the front porch), and W.A. wore himself right out!  We enjoyed Westmoreland Berry Farm greatly and cannot wait to get back in the Fall for some "pick your own" (hopefully) apples!  This adventure was THREE THUMBS UP!

Stay tuned for a day trip adventure to Solomons Island, Maryland!
Cheers!
